The moment the thief suffers instant karma – he gets more than he bargained for when he breaks into the house and has now been locked up for more than two years

A burglar who suffered instant karma after trying to break into a house has been jailed for more than two years.

David Timmins, 42, broke into a house on Penistone Road in Sheffield in the early hours of September 2.

But he mistakenly alerted the owners to his presence when he switched on the downstairs light.

The couple immediately called the police, who, when they arrived ten minutes later, found Timmins pinned to the sofa by one of the home’s owners.

The next day, Timmins pleaded guilty to one count of residential burglary and theft – no violence at the hearing.

On November 1, the 42-year-old was sentenced at Sheffield Crown Court to two years and six months in prison.

They also have to pay a surcharge of £228.

Footage released by South Yorkshire Police showed a topless man straddling Timmins on a sofa.

As shouts of “don’t move” can be heard in the footage, as Timmins replies: “I’m on the ground.”

A clip from a police body-worn body camera later captured Timmins telling an officer: “I pinched him … I’m going to give you a light interview.”

In a later clip, Timmins can be heard telling her he’s under arrest for burglary, to which he replies: “Why is it burglary?”

The officer can then be heard saying:

The officer can then be heard saying: “Listen to me, you entered the premises without permission with the intention of taking goods.”

Case Officer Katie Summerhayes said: “The victim of this burglary showed incredible bravery in apprehending Timmins before we arrived on the scene.

“Our officers acted quickly and, largely thanks to the victim, Timmins had no choice but to plead guilty.

“I am pleased with the outcome of this case, which shows that we will take strong, strong action against thieves who believe they can terrorize our communities and get away with it.”
