November 9, 1924: Thomas Saattkamp, ​​member of the notorious “Egan Rats” organized crime group that staged the $55,000 mail robbery in Staunton on May 26, 1923, was taken from the McLean County Jailwhere he was staying for the last three months. Authorities took him to Quincy, where the 12 defendants will be arraigned this week.

November 9, 1949: Trinity Lutheran Church Choir will celebrate its 50th anniversary Sunday (November 13) at the 10:30 a.m. worship service. Special invitations have been extended to all former members of the choir to attend the service, which will be broadcast on radio station WJBC. Choir members and their families will also have a potluck dinner at the Lutheran school hall at 6pm on Sunday as another anniversary celebration.

November 9, 1974: Bloomington Parking Validation Program takes effect today. The city’s last parking meters were adjusted on Friday night (November 8) to accept coins or tokens. What this means is that merchants can buy tokens from the city and give them to customers; each token will be worth one hour of free parking in a metered space. Traders can buy 50 tokens for $5.

November 9, 1999: Caribel Washington of Bloomington is one of the 70 people in Illinois being honored with the Studs Terkel Humanities Award. Washington, 85, is a frequent public speaker on civil rights and was the founder and first president of the Black History Project, an effort to chronicle African-American heritage in the Twin Cities.
