Former Denver cardiologist sentenced to 158 years after drugging, assaulting women

DENVER (KDVR) — On Friday, former Denver cardiologist Stephen Matthews was sentenced to 158 years after being convicted of drug and sexual assault several women he met on dating apps.

In August, Matthews was convicted of dozens of charges regarding what the prosecution said were patterns of alleged sexual assault.

Matthews will now serve 158 years in prison with consecutive terms for each assault.

11 women say they were drugged, sexually assaulted

Matthews’ first arrest occurred in April 2023 after a woman accused him of drugging her on a date after meeting on a dating app. Several other women then came forward with similar stories, leading to a lawsuit that included allegations from 11 women.

in the process argued the prosecution Matthews generally met these women on dating apps. Once home, Matthews gave them an injection or a drink, and soon the women suffered large memory lapses. Prosecutors said the attacks spanned between 2019 and 2023.

“This guy is one of the most prolific serial rapists in the history of the state of Colorado,” said former Denver District Attorney Mitch Morrissey.

Prosecutors told jurors they heard from nearly 60 witnesses and about 500 pieces of evidence in the trial. Meanwhile, the defense said these large memory gaps would make it difficult to prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt.

Ultimately, the jury found Matthews guilty of all charges except Counts 23, 24, and 25, which include assault – sexual assault incapable of assessing nature, physically helpless sexual assault, and submission against sexual assault against the will.
