Israel rushes to evacuate hundreds of people after anti-Semitic attack in Amsterdam

The Israeli government rushed to evacuate hundreds of people on Friday after a series of anti-Semitic riots in Amsterdam, according to multiple reports.

“This is a terrible time for our city. … I am very ashamed of the behavior that was shown last night,” said Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema about the incident, according to CNN.

Five Israelis who were injured during the incident have now been released from hospital, according to reports. Another 20 to 30 people suffered minor injuries.

“Tensions” were high by Thursday evening, police said. The day before, some fans of Maccabi – an Israeli soccer team – allegedly posted anti-Arab content on social media, according to reports. The football game itself was relatively calm, but chaos broke out after it ended.

Maccabi supporters were “attacked, abused and had fireworks thrown at them,” Halsema said on Friday. One individual told the BBC that more than 10 men approached him, demanded to know if he was Jewish, and when he confirmed he was, began beating him.

“I realized I had a lot of blood on my nose and my nose was broken and it’s very painful,” the person told the BBC. “I’m getting on an Israeli plane that came to our rescue this afternoon and I’m going to get medical treatment back home.”

“While we appreciate that leaders in the Netherlands and Europe have rightly condemned this heinous attack, it calls for more than statements,” Rabbi Moshe Hauer, executive vice president of the Orthodox Union, said in a statement. “Governments are being called upon to take new and concrete steps – both proactive and reactive – to stop this scourge, protect Jews and prosecute those who criminally attack us.”
