Sean McDermott gives disheartening update on Bills WR Keon Coleman’s wrist injury

Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott shared a disheartening update on rookie wide receiver Keon Coleman’s wrist injury during his Friday media availability, telling reporters the 21-year-old is likely to miss some weeks because of his illness. The secondary boss shared the update shortly after revealing that Coleman was ruled out for the team’s Week 10 clash with the Indianapolis Colts during a Friday radio appearance.

“It’s probably going to be more than this week,” McDermott said. “It will probably take several weeks, I just don’t know how far into the future it will go.”

McDermott offered a bit of an argument, telling the media that he doesn’t think the first-year pass rusher will have to go to the bench (though he didn’t say there’s a “gray area” regarding his timeline).

Coleman was injured in the final minute of the team’s Week 9 win over the Miami Dolphins; quarterback Josh Allen targeted him on a deep pass that was broken up by Miami safety Jordan Poyer, with the veteran quarterback initiating contact with his head and apparently crushing Coleman’s hand with his helmet. The rookie pass-catcher left the game and was later seen with a taped wrist; McDermott said several times throughout the week as the team was still gathering information about his illness.

Coleman capped Buffalo’s Week 9 win with a 21-yard catch, just a fraction of his 417 receiving yards in nine games, good for second on the team. He has played the position on 387 snaps and is the Bills’ most reliable outside target in the intermediate and deep passing games, indicating that his extended absence will be felt. Mack Hollins looks set to become a prominent contributor on offense again with Coleman released.
