Paddington in Peru explained ending and post-credits scene

For those who can’t get enough of Britain’s most famous brown bear, director Dougal Wilson just treated us to a post-credits. Here it is complete Paddington in Peru ending explained for good measure.

There are some movies that you can take or leave, but when it comes to Paddington, we always want more. Not only does the threequel provide this, but new movie offers Olivia Colman wandering around the Peruvian hills like a singing nun. Is there any reason? Not really!

But it’s all in good fun, and god we need more of it. You won’t even notice that Sally Hawkins has been recast, with Emily Mortimer stepping seamlessly into the role of Mrs Brown.

Anyway, what are those boring browns doing this time? Doing what any bear would do with his own passport and getting out of Dodge. Here’s the full ending of Paddington in Peru shown, along with the post-credits scenes. Obvious, spoilers ahead.

Paddington in Peru ending: The Reverend Mother has a dark side

Paddington in Peru ends with Reverend Mother reveals her true identity – she is Hunter’s cousinbelieved to be dead. After you rejected them, Paddington finds Aunt Lucy in El Doradowhere Paddington also comes from.

Let’s back up a second. Paddington got himself a shiny new passport, along with a worrying letter from the Retired Bears’ Home. According to Reverend Mame (Olivia Colman), Aunt Lucy (Imelda Staunton) has become withdrawn and depressed, and Paddington is encouraged to come visit her.

Of course, the Browns, who are getting older and have new insecurities, are there in no time—but when they arrive, Aunt Lucy is nowhere to be found. Reverend Mother is suspiciously coy about the whole thing, sending the family on a wild chase through the Amazon (all except Mrs. Bird, played by Julie Walters, who stays behind). They quickly meet Hunter Cabot (Antonio Banderas) and his daughter Ruth (Carla Tous), who own a boat.

They agree to take Aunt Lucy to where she was last seen, Rumi Rock. We learn that this is where the entrance to El Dorado is supposed to be, but it’s also revealed that Hunter has his own intentions of going there. He comes from a long line of gold hunters who are driven mad by a greedy suffering to find it. None of them were ever successful, with Hunter feeling the pressure to bring home the treasure.

Hunter sees Aunt Lucy’s bracelet, as Paddington has been wearing it the entire time he’s been gone. He is convinced that it is the key to finding El Dorado, taking it to “decode” its meaning. That night, he throws Ruth—who just wants her father to focus on what’s really important—off the boat, accidentally following suit himself. The Browns find themselves in rough waters, with their boat sinking.

Paddington is then separated from the Browns, finding Hunter at Rumi Rock. According to legend, the bears are in charge, with Hunter using Paddington’s kind heart to lead him on a two-man chase to his entrance.

Back at the nursing home, Mrs. Bird is on Reverend Mother. She discovers a secret room behind the organ where Reverend Mother is tracking the Browns through a tracking necklace she unknowingly gave to Mrs. Brown (Emily Mortimer). Under the guise of safety, she offers to take Mrs. Bird to them as they approach Paddington.

From there, all hell breaks loose. Paddington and Hunter arrive at the supposed entrance to El Dorado (using Aunt Lucy’s advice) only for Hunter to try to kill Paddington for the bracelet. At the same time, Reverend Mother picked up Brown and landed in the same place, leading to a showdown against all parties.

Here we learn that Reverend Mother is Hunter’s long-lost cousin, hired under the guise of the nursing home to find El Dorado’s gold. When he found Aunt Lucy researching it, he threw it into the Amazon and staged a disappearance, knowing that Paddington was the key to unlocking the secret.

Paddington and Aunt Lucy in Paddington in Peru

The ending of Paddington in Peru leads to the elimination of Reverend Mame (she’s not dead, don’t worry) while Hunter has a change of heart after reuniting with Ruth. Paddington uses the bracelet to unlock an entrance built into a cliff, learning that El Dorado is actually where he came from – and even better, Aunt Lucy is safe there.

She describes what happened to her in the Amazon, as well as how she came to know that it was Paddington’s house (surprise, the bracelet was really his all along). Paddington meets his “tribe” and learns that the region’s gold is actually oranges. The bears posed as forest spirits to protect El Dorado from discovery (this will make more sense when you watch it).

The Browns are convinced that Paddington will ask to stay, but he actually asks to return to London with them. As a result, the family is closer than ever while leading their separate lives, with Paddington inviting the El Dorado bears on a holiday.

The post-credits scene features a familiar face

It technically exists two post-credits scenes in Paddington in Peru. The first follows the adventures of the El Dorado bears in London, the second takes everyone to see Phoenix Buchanan (Hugh Grant) in prison.

Hugh Grant dances in prison in Paddington 2

As the credits begin to roll, you’ll see a delightful montage of Paddington and the El Dorado bears on their merry-go-round over the Big Smoke. He even gives them all the right names – from Waterloo and Bromley By Bow to the two tiny twins called Elephant and Castle.

(If you haven’t caught on yet, they are all names of London Underground stations).

This then gently stops, and Paddington takes the newly named gang to visit a familiar face in the second post-credits scene. This is none other than Phoenix Buchanan, the dazzling thief we first met in Paddington 2. He is still serving his prison sentence, but hints that he will be released in the very near future. Paddington 4 maybe?

Before any more spinoffs, Phoenix has a plan for the new bears – a Goldilocks & the Three Bears-esque stage show. He gives up a few bears to appear in star shows, and it looks like the group is going to hit the ground running…but does it ever pan out?

We don’t know, as this is where the post-credits cut to black (for now).
