Monroe County ISD employee arrested after home invasion, hostage taking: Sheriff

MONROE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WXYZ) – A Monroe County Intermediate School District employee was arrested Friday after the sheriff said the man took a hostage at a home he invaded after “acting erratically” in outside the school building.

It started at the Monroe County ISD building located on S. Raisinville Road near S. Custer Road.

Authorities said a sergeant assigned to the school was told by staff about a man outside who was behaving erratically. The sergeant found the man in a rear parking lot, spoke with him and confirmed he was an employee of the school.

The sergeant reported that while speaking with the man, he made gestures that appeared to be armed. The sergeant notified dispatch and multiple units responded to the area.

At this point, the sheriff said the suspect walked south from the school and left the property. The sergeant continued to follow him.

The suspect then entered a nearby home that was unlocked with two women and a man inside. The suspect barricaded himself in a bedroom with one of the women, officials said.

Deputies surrounded the home, entered and negotiated with the suspect. They forced their way into the room and rescued the hostage. She was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The suspect was detained and arrested for home invasion. His name is withheld at this time because he has not yet been formally charged.

Multiple agencies assisted at the scene, including the Michigan State Police, Ida Township Fire Department and Monroe Community Ambulance.

Detectives are continuing their investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff’s office at 734-240-7530.
