Lincoln Police and Lincoln Public Schools Release Resource Officer Program Annual Report

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – School resource officers are stationed at high and middle schools in the Lincoln Public School District, playing a key role in maintaining campus safety and security.

According to a new report jointly released by Lincoln Public Schools (LPS) and the Lincoln Police Department (LPD), students say having officers in schools helps them feel safer. The report shows that in both middle schools and high schools, calls for service — where officers are called to a school — are down from last year.

The total number of referrals, which occur when there is probable cause that a juvenile has committed a crime and the case is sent to the county attorney, is down 54 percent from the four-year average.

“This is a testament to the effectiveness of Lincoln Public Schools’ behavioral framework and the excellent instruction and support provided by our teachers,” said Dr. John Skretta, LPS Assistant Superintendent.

The report also addressed school discipline, an area where school resource officers do not intervene. The data showed that students who identify as male, black, Hispanic, or mixed race are disproportionately represented in both out-of-school and in-school suspensions.
