Pune: The RTO has initiated the process of suspending the driving licenses of 200 drivers after the Pune police recommended cancellation of their licenses for driving under the influence of alcohol.
Pune RTO Archana Gaikwad told TOI on Thursday, “We have initiated the process to suspend driving licenses of 200 vehicle users, whose names were recommended in the first proposal sent to us by the police.”
She said: “We have the power to suspend driving licenses although the police have sought to have the licenses cancelled. While the driver’s license suspension process has begun, the actual suspension will take some time as most of our employees have been employed in the state assembly. electoral duty”.
Gaikwad said, “Only the court can cancel a driving license on a drunk driving conviction. We can cancel a person’s driving license in the event of a second conviction by a court for a similar offence. As such, we are now suspending driver’s licenses for a prescribed period (90 days or 120 days) provided by law.
Pune police have taken action against 2,556 people found driving under the influence of alcohol in the last 10 days. The police have sent proposals to the regional transport officer (RTO) in Pune for canceling the driving licenses of 485 of these offenders.
Following the October 11 accident in Mundhwa, in which a food delivery person died after an Audi car driven by a drunk businessman hit his scooter, the police have launched a special drive against drunk drivers. A total of 2,556 vehicle users have been fined till October 31 for drink driving.
Additional Commissioner of Police Manoj Patil told TOI, “Out of the 2,556 drunken offenders, we have sent reports to the RTO for cancellation of driving licenses of 485 offenders.”
Asked why the police did not go to court to get the licenses canceled when the provisions of the Motor Vehicles (MV) Act were clear in this regard, the additional commissioner said, “We know that the RTO has the power to suspend driving licences, but we have written to cancel the licenses Our duty is to report the offense to the RTO as they are the licensing authority.
Patil said, “We will also approach the court, after registering the FIR against the drunk drivers, to seek cancellation of the driving licences. We are pursuing the matter at various courts in the city.”
