TL;DR

  • Google appears to be testing a redesign in Messages that moves the Magic Compose button.
  • In this test, Magic Compose now appears above the message box.
  • The change could help prevent accidental presses.

Lately, Google has been very busy working on changes to the Messages app. Just a few days ago, we reported on a number of changes that could be coming our way, such as a less tedious way to check time stamps and the ability to choose the resolution of the image you are sending. Now it seems that the company is testing a new location for the Magic Compose feature.

If you’re not familiar with Magic Compose, it’s essentially a better version of Smart Reply. The AI tool will give you a variety of answers it deems appropriate based on the conversation to help save you some time. It was first released in beta on May 25, 2024.

This feature previously appeared in or on the side of the text box. But according Android Authority contributor Mishaal RahmanGoogle seems to be testing a new location that puts the icon above the message box. You can see an example of the old placement in the screenshot on the left and the new placement in the screenshot on the right below.

It’s not a huge change by any means. However, this new location should make it a little less likely to accidentally tap the button the next time you write a message.

In August, we noticed Uninstalling the APK that Google was working on moving the feature to the page that appears when you tap the plus button. It also appeared that the tech giant was planning to remake Magic Compose in Magic Rewrite. Since it was an APK teardown, there was no guarantee that this would happen. But given this current test, it looks like Google may have found a more preferable place to put the feature.
