Extra Weather | Passing showers are beneficial for many

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) – Post-election gray skies dominated Wednesday. The lead gray color towards the horizon a sign that a weak but wet weather system was passing. While precipitation totals on this front have been quite low (a few hundredths to a few tenths), given the extent of recent brush fires, the moisture has been beneficial in helping to bring down the fire threat.

At the same time, the notion that slick roads would be possible after a long drought is a call to action. Slow down where there are leaves on the roads and wherever the road bends, whether on a rural hill or on the interstate.

Of course, newly seeded lawns need rain to help with late-season growth before winter sets in. These rains will help a little. Sunday rains can be much better!

Another branch of wet weather, mold will flourish especially where the leaves have been moistened. When the leaves get wet, the fungus promotes growth. These fungi then release microscopic spores into the air, which can be easily inhaled by children raking the leaves or simply jumping into the piles.

Tonight and Thursday, the sky will tend to be cloudy with sporadic showers. Patches of fog will form at night. Temperatures in the 60s most of the time.

Friday and Saturday will dry the sky with sun. Highs will be 65-70. Minimum 45-50. By Sunday, there is a chance for some moisture to arrive from the south to give us some soaking rain. But a word of caution is in order; namely, droughts are not easily broken and often delay the push of moisture. After all, that’s how droughts happen.
