How to deal with different emotions after election day

Regardless of the outcome you might have hoped for on election day, the results can generate a wave of emotions. It’s important to take care of your mental health no matter the situation.

Mental health expert and “Better Men” podcast host Mike Veny said if you’re hoping for a Democratic victory, now is the time to feel your emotions and feel good about them.

For supporters of former President Donald Trump, projected to win, Veny said to celebrate the moment, but know that it’s important to understand that even if you don’t understand the other side or think the other side is wrong, their feelings are valid and they have some concerns real that are legitimate.

“So I encourage you to be a good man and check them out with love, not to say, you know, I’m sorry you lost, but just really check them out,” Veny said.

If you are struggling to cope, you should contact a mental health professional or call 988, the suicide hotline, for more help.

When navigating relationships with family and friends after Election Day, Veny said the best thing to do is set boundaries.

“It’s important to have conversations and set boundaries and say, ‘Look, we can go out to eat, not discuss politics.’ And it’s important to stick to it for all parties,” Veny said.
