Granberry wins race for Nueces County District Attorney

James “Jimmy” Granberry defeated Democratic challenger Terry Shamsie in the runoff the race for Nueces County District Attorneyaccording to the full, unofficial election returns.

Granberry got 55.65 percent of the vote, or 63,907 votes, over Shamsie’s 44.35 percent, or 50,925 votes, according to complete, unofficial reports, with all 65 precincts reporting by late Tuesday night.

The two candidates brought decades of experience in the field of criminal defense law, plus years of practice as attorneys in the Nueces County courts.

Granberry brings over 35 years of criminal law experience as both a prosecutor and defense attorney. He was appointed by Gov. Greg Abbott to the 105th Judicial District last year to serve out the remainder of former District Attorney Mark Gonzalez’s term. Gonzalez resigned to run in the Democratic primary for the nomination to challenge US Senator Ted Cruz.

The attorney’s office emphasized issues such as fighting crime and securing county funding to attract and retain qualified prosecutors and defense attorneys in Nueces County. Campaigning on a tough stance on crime, the lawyer says criminals should be tried and held accountable for the crimes they commit. At the same time, he emphasizes rehabilitating juvenile offenders and ensuring that victims have the resources to navigate the adult and juvenile systems.

Shamsie is a criminal defense attorney who has served as a Nueces County Judge, Assistant District Attorney and County Court Judge at Law No. 5.

Both candidates emphasized the need to address emerging issues being handled by the DA’s office — namely an increase in violent crime among minors and the commission of juvenile crimes involving firearms.

The prosecutor represents the state government in the prosecution of crimes and is the chief law enforcement officer and legal officer in their jurisdiction.

The prosecutor also oversees a team of prosecutors and assistant prosecutors, who represent the state and prosecute on behalf of the prosecutor.

The Nueces County District Attorney serves a four-year term.

Granberry’s term in his appointed position was set to expire on December 31.

The results will not be official until the election is certified.
