The New York Mets could make a drastic decision with the former top prospect in 2025

After reaching the National League Championship Series in 2024, the New York Mets are already looking forward to 2025.

And as they begin to think about their roster next year, they are considering a potentially drastic move with a former top prospect.

According to Mike Puma, who covers the Mets for the New York Post:

David Stearns isn’t ruling out the possibility of Brett Baty seeing action on the field. The organization was impressed with how quickly Baty 2B took over last season.

Stearns made the comments at the CEO meetings in Texas. They started on Monday evening.

Baty, 24, came in with a lot of fanfare as a top prospect, but hasn’t been able to put it together in New York. In parts of three seasons, he hit .215. He hit just .229 in 50 games this season with four home runs and 16 RBI.

He was ranked No. 33 ahead of the 2023 season by Baseball America and ranked No. 21 by MLB.com.

Baty is a third baseman, but it doesn’t look like he has a path there anymore given the presence of Mark Vientos at the position. If Baty wants to stay in Mets organization, the field might be his best way. However, if the Mets were to go ahead and sign Juan Soto this offseason, that could be tough as well.

There’s always the chance that Baty could be traded and get a fresh start elsewhere as well.

In 62 games at Triple-A Syracuse this year, Baty hit .252 with 16 homers.
