Man breaks into Sheriff Gregory Tony’s vehicle, steals firearm magazines, among other items

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A man was arrested after breaking into a Broward Sheriff’s Office vehicle assigned to Sheriff Gregory Tony, the agency confirmed to Local 10 News on Tuesday.

According to BSO spokesman Carey Codd, 42-year-old Andre Demetric Perry broke into the sheriff’s vehicle at approximately 2:40 a.m. while it was parked in Fort Lauderdale.

“Several items were stolen, including firearm magazines, a handcuff key and personal items,” Codd wrote in an email to Local 10. “No firearms were stolen.”

Codd said a “BOLO” was issued for the suspect, and Fort Lauderdale police located and arrested Perry later in the day on unrelated charges.

Perry was then linked to the vehicle break-in and now faces charges of burglary of an unoccupied vehicle and grand theft.

“After Perry’s arrest for the vehicle burglary, several items were recovered, including the handcuff key,” Codd wrote.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Perry remained in custody at the Broward Main Jail.

He appeared in court Monday morning, where it was revealed that Andre Perry is an alias and Perry’s legal name is Anthony Perry.

The judge ordered that he be fitted with a GPS monitor if he posts bond and stay away from the residential area where the burglary occurred.

The court heard Perry was on probation at the time of the burglary and has a lengthy criminal record for burglary, possession of cocaine, domestic assault by strangulation, assault on a law enforcement officer and grand theft.

A public defender who appeared in court told the judge that Perry does not work and is currently homeless.

BSO asks that anyone with additional information about the burglary call Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS (8477).
