Did you know that even New Yorkers with a prior felony or misdemeanor conviction can vote in elections?

“A law passed in 2021 restores the right to vote for a person convicted of a felony upon release from prison, regardless of whether they are on parole or on post-release supervision. If a convicted felon is not incarcerated, he is eligible to register to vote,” according to New York State Board of Elections. “Prior to the enactment of this law, a convicted felon was not legally permitted to register to vote until he was released from parole or from any post-release supervision.”

Thanks to a law signed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo in 2021, previously convicted felons can vote and don’t require any special documentation. right New York Civil Liberties Unionthe only New Yorkers who cannot vote are currently incarcerated.
