Oyster Card update launched by Transport for London

Transport to London (TfL) is once again accepting applications for Oyster 18+, 18-25 Care Leaver and Apprentice Oyster photo cards following a cyber security breach on 1 September.

From Monday 4 November, TfL is implementing a phased approach to concession photo card applications, with the aim of processing them as quickly as possible, with those ultimately affected by the cyber attack being dealt with directly.

As things begin to return to normal, Transport for London plans to start accepting new applications for the Oyster 60+ photo card, 5-10, 11-15 and 16+ Zip Oyster photo cards by the end of November.

After applying for new photo cards, customers can transfer any remaining credit from their expired Zip photo cards to their new ones by talking to or visiting one of TfL’s customer service centres.

Customers are still advised to keep a record of any charges they believe should be refunded. While those who need to apply for a Freedom Pass can do so through London Councils.

Since the security breach, TfL has worked closely with the National Crime Agency and the National Cyber Security Center throughout this process and has informed the Information Commissioner’s Office, stressing that the security of its network and customer data is a priority.

In response to the incident, TfL made the difficult choice to temporarily suspend new applications for concession photo cards while they carried out essential security checks.

Now that services are restored, it is hoped that normalcy can begin to resume with any individual claims and cases dealt with promptly.

“TfL has worked incredibly hard around the clock to restore services that had to be temporarily shut down while responding to a highly sophisticated cyber attack. The Mayor and I congratulate TfL on its response, which kept London moving and avoided the consequences of the attack being even worse.

We are really pleased that TfL has started accepting Oyster Photocard applications for more concessions, including 18+ Students and 18 – 25 Care Leavers, and we are sure that work is ongoing to ensure that other photocard applications are open as as soon as possible in the coming weeks. .’
