Who are the Menendez brothers?

Lyle Menendez and Erik Menendez, known as the Menendez Brothers, rose to fame in 1989 after murdering their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez. Kitty was a housewife while Jose worked as a entertainment executive. They shot their parents in their Beverly Hills mansion. At the time, Lyle was 21 years old, while Erik was 18 years old.

The brothers testified that they they killed their parents in self-defense. They explained that they feared their parents would kill them if they revealed that they had suffered sexual and emotional abuse at the hands of their father for many years.

Lyle reiterated that he confronted his father about sexually assaulting Erik days before the murders and he responded angrily. He provided explicit evidence of the alleged sexual assault. Their mother was devastated as a result of Jose’s many affairs.

No one believed they were victims of sexual abuse. Everyone thought they killed their parents out of greed because of how they behaved in the months following the murders. The brothers acted like they won the lottery as they lavishly spent their inheritance.

After a series of trials and mistrials, they were found guilty of first-degree murder. The judge ruled that there was insufficient evidence to support a finding that Jose had sexually abused his sons. Each of them was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The brothers were sent to separate prisons to serve their sentences.

Are the Menendez brothers okay?

The brothers are doing well and have earned several college degrees. In 2018, they were reunited and allowed to serve their sentences at the same time correctional facility.

Roy Rossello, a former member of the Menudo band, also filed a complaint alleging Jose Menendez sexually assaulted him. A hearing has been set for November 26, 2024. All eyes are on the judiciary to see if it will reconsider the life sentence.
