Uganda: Victims of lightning strikes have been buried

The victims of the light strike in the Palabek settlement camp in northern Uganda were buried on Sunday (November 3rd).

They gathered to pray when the rain started around 5pm on Saturday and the thunder and lightning struck half an hour later.

The police identified 14 victims, 8 of whom were men.

Deadly lightning strikes are frequently reported in Uganda during the wet season.

“From the numbers we identified, we had 14 deaths. And these are people who died on the spot and the age group from 9 to 21, the youngest being a 9-year-old girl, then the oldest 21-old old man.”

Police investigations revealed an absence of anti-lightning infrastructure.

The victims were attending a prayer service in a makeshift metal structure when the light came on.

The dead are said to be from neighboring South Sudan.
