Man in custody after ‘active shooter situation’ in West Seattle hometown

A man was arrested after an “active shooter situation” in a small West Seattle hometown Thursday afternoon.

Seattle Police Department Detective Eric Muñoz said officers responded to reports of multiple gunshots being fired at a small hometown in the 9700 block of Myers Way South around 12:40 a.m. Thursday .

In an email to KOMO News, a spokesperson for the Low Income Housing Institute described the situation as an “active shooter situation” at the “Myers Place shelter facility.” According to LIHI’s website, the shelter is called Camp Second Chance, 50 units of tiny houses on site, and is “managed by LIHI in partnership with program participants through a self-managed model.”

Muñoz said when officers arrived at the scene, staff members were trying to get people to safety.

“Essentially, people were running for their lives because this was a suspected active shooter scene,” Muñoz told KOMO News at the scene.

Muñoz said a 60-year-old man began firing a gun through the window and door of his small residence after a staff member gave him and his girlfriend new keys to another residence, possibly to be moved.

“For whatever reason, the subject became angry and agitated and started shooting through the door at that worker,” Muñoz said, adding that the information provided is preliminary.

Responding officers found probable cause for first degree assault on the man and a SWAT team was called to the scene because the man had barricaded himself inside one of the tiny houses. Muñoz said a hostage negotiation team, a crisis response team and mental health professionals were also called to the scene to assist with the incident.

Muñoz said it is currently unknown if the man’s girlfriend was initially inside the residence when shots were fired, but said she was outside near police cooperating with authorities while “the operation was ongoing.” Muñoz said the gun the man was using is believed to belong to his girlfriend.

Officials said there were some “difficulties” in negotiating with the man, but he eventually surrendered peacefully.

The man was arrested on a charge of first degree assault. However, additional charges could be filed later.

No injuries were reported following the shooting.
