Dartmouth College is testing the emergency alert system

HANOVER, NH (WCAX) – An emergency alert system’s sirens went off Monday in Hanover, New Hampshire.

Dartmouth College conducted a test of its mass emergency notification system that used sirens and outdoor public addresses.

The test is conducted by the Dartmouth Office of Emergency Management each year.

Members of the Dartmouth community were also notified via email and text.

City officials say the college and city work closely together in the event of an actual emergency.

“Yes, it also needs to be tested, so it’s good to know what’s going on and that it’s working. And then just back and forth communication at every level to make sure we know what’s going on on campus, they know what’s going on in the city,” Hanover Fire Chief Michael Gilbert said.

The siren and voice from outside speakers can be heard up to 10 miles from campus.

Monday’s exercise lasted only a few minutes.
