Man sentenced after breaching probation following theft charges, DA says

A Boston man was sentenced to two years in prison last week after violating his probation on new charges related to the theft of more than $30,000 worth of merchandise from retail stores, officials said.

Essie Billingslea, 34, was charged Oct. 7 with three counts of theft over $1,200, Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden said. He was held on $5,000 bond on the new charges. He will be back in court on November 19.

At his subsequent probation violation hearing on Oct. 31, a judge ruled that Billingslea violated the terms of his probation set in July when he pleaded to a charge of retail theft and received a two-year suspended sentence, he said the district attorney. .

Boston police went to the Victoria’s Secret store at 100 Huntington Ave. on Aug. 27 after receiving a call about a theft, the district attorney said. Store workers said a man with a reusable TJ Maxx went in and stole about $1,560 worth of items, the district attorney said.

Police then went to Lululemon at 208 Newbury St. on Aug. 29 after receiving a call about another theft, the district attorney said. The manager said a man in a yellow shirt and black pants hid several boxes of 145 pairs of leggings, collectively valued at about $29,000, in TJ Maxx shopping bags.

Police also went to another Lululemon at 776 Boylston St. on Sept. 4, the district attorney said. A store employee said a man entered the store and placed approximately 31 pairs of leggings in a TJ Maxx bag. The stolen goods were around $3,200.

Police were able to discover it was Billingslea from previous incidents and similar crimes, the district attorney said. He has been convicted of 20 theft-related offenses since 2021.
