As Spain fears more flooding and deaths as rain batters Catalonia, the UAE Mission in Madrid has issued a new warning to citizens. The mission urged citizens to be cautious due to severe weather conditions in the Catalonia region.

Spain’s national weather service, AEMET, announced the end of the state of emergency for Valencia, but torrential rains lashed Catalonia, where residents received phone alerts urging extreme caution.

The death toll stands at 217 — almost all in the eastern region of Valencia — with the country fearing the discovery of more bodies as an unknown number of people remain missing.

Local authorities in Valencia extended travel restrictions for two more days, canceled classes and urged residents to work from home to facilitate the work of emergency services.

The UAE authorities in Madrid also stressed the importance of following the safety instructions issued by local authorities and asked citizens to contact them in case of emergency 0097180024, or 00971800444444 and register with the Tawajudi service.

Grim situation

Thousands of soldiers, police officers, civil guards and firefighters spent the sixth day distributing aid and clearing mud and debris to find bodies.

But relief efforts only reached some towns days after the disaster, and in many cases volunteers were the first to provide food, water, sanitation and cleaning equipment.

Divers on Monday focused their search for the missing bodies in garages and a multi-storey car park in the city of Aldaia.

The storm trapped many victims in their vehicles on roads and in underground spaces such as parking lots, tunnels and garages where rescue operations are particularly difficult.

Storms coming from the Mediterranean Sea are common in this season. But scientists have warned that human-induced climate change is increasing the ferocity, duration and frequency of extreme weather events.
