Israeli soldiers attack UN peacekeepers who were observing them

“After realizing they were being observed, the IDF soldiers fired into the post,” UNIFIL said of the incident.

Israeli soldiers attacked UN peacekeepers at an observation post in southern Lebanon observing army raids nearby, the UN said on Friday, as Israeli forces appeared to target people documenting their assault on the country.

In a statement, the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) said peacekeepers were at a permanent observation post near Dhayra on Tuesday, watching as Israeli forces conducted “house clearing operations” in the area.

“After realizing they were being observed, the IDF soldiers fired into the post. The guards on duty retreated to avoid being shot,” he said said the group.

UNIFIL noted that Israeli forces repeatedly demanded that peacekeepers in southern Lebanon leave their posts and “deliberately damage camera, lighting and communications equipment” at UN positions. “Despite the pressure on the mission and our troop-contributing countries, the peacekeepers remain in position and on task. We will continue to undertake our mandated tasks of monitoring and reporting,” the group said.

The attack is the latest evidence that Israel is trying to ensure its actions go undocumented by outside observers, as some experts noted, as Israeli forces dam southern Lebanon and Beirut, killing at least 1,900 people so far in the last month.

As part of their mission to report violations of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, UN peacekeepers patrol and monitors military operations by Israeli forces or Hezbollah in southern Lebanon. In recent weeks, despite international law prohibiting attacks on peacekeepers, Israeli forces have conducted at least two dozen attacks on UNIFIL, including one white phosphorus attack which injured 15 of the UN peacekeepers.

The group noted on Friday that, just this month, peacekeepers had observed military “clashes” in at least 12 locations in South Lebanon.

“The exclusion of outside observers, whether journalists or UN peacekeepers, appears to be a deliberate strategy to limit scrutiny of Israeli forces at a time when they are most needed,” said Shane Darcy, professor at the National University of Galway and a member of the organization. The Irish Center for Human Rights said Al Jazeera recent.

In addition, on Friday, Israeli forces killed three journalists in southern Lebanon around 4 a.m. local time. Israel gave no warning of the attack, which say the witnesses it was intentional because Israeli forces knew that the bombed compound housed journalists.

As Israel targets those who report on their atrocities, Israeli forces have carried out horrific attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure.

On Friday, Lebanese Health Minister Firass Abiad said Israel had attacked 55 hospitals in Lebanon amid its onslaught, so far closing eight hospitals. Israeli attacks on ambulances and first responders killed at least 151 paramedics and wounded 212, Abiad said. Moreover, the director-general of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus reported Thursday that more than 100 health centers, or a third of the country’s health facilities, were forced to close due to Israeli attacks.

“Attacks against the medical and paramedical sectors in Lebanon are direct and intentional aggressions,” Abiad said. “This is a war crime.”
