Red flag warning issued for Southern California as Santa Ana winds increase fire danger

PORTER RANCH, Calif. (KABC) — Southern Californians are preparing for the return of the Santa Ana wind, which can mean an increased risk of fires as well as tree limbs and power lines flying around.

And coming this close to Halloween means other dangers for some homeowners.

Arnie Padilla of Burbank still has an elaborate display at his home paying homage to Alice in Wonderland. But the winds made him nervous. Not only could he send his display flying around the neighborhood, but he knows there’s a risk of electrical sparks.

“I have to stay up all night checking,” Padilla said. “Every second I hear the wind on the window just blowing a little whistle, I’m like okay, come out and check.”

Firefighters say winds make even the smallest spark dangerous.

“We’re at 55 miles to 85 miles (per hour) in the mountains for just gusts and sustained winds, and in the valleys we’re looking at 35 to 55 miles,” Los Angeles County Fire Capt. Sheila Kelliher said.

Kelliher advises residents to stay away from potentially dangerous activities during such strong winds.

“If you’re doing yard work or mowing, wait until the wind blows,” Kelliher said. “Wait until you have a better chance of not starting a fire.”
