University student arrested in Iran after stripping in apparent hijab protest

Nov. 3 (UPI) — A female student at an Iranian university has been arrested after she reportedly stripped off her clothes in protest against the Islamic regime’s strict dress code.

In a video circulating on the Internet, the woman is seen in her underwear with her head uncovered. She stands by the steps of Tehran’s Islamic Azad University campus before standing up and walking around with her arms crossed.

Amir Mahjoub, director general of public relations at the university, confirmed in an online statement that the student had been arrested on Saturday for committing an “indecent act”.

“The motivation and reasons for this student’s action are under investigation,” Mahjoub said.

He later stated that the student told police under questioning that she was “under severe mental pressure and had a mental disorder.”

Iran International, citing a group of students on Telegram, reported which the student undressed after her clothes were torn by security forces who were harassing her for not wearing a headscarf.

Amnesty International, which also released video of the incident online, called on Iranian authorities to “immediately” and unconditionally release the unidentified woman.

In a statementit said the woman was “violently arrested” for her protest “against the abusive enforcement of the mandatory veil by security officials” at the university.

“Pending her release, the authorities must protect her from torture and other ill-treatment and ensure access to her family and a lawyer,” the statement said. “Allegations of beatings and sexual violence against her during her arrest require independent and impartial investigations. Those responsible must answer.”

Mai Sato, UN Special Rapporteur on Iran, said she is “closely monitoring this incident, including the authorities’ response.”

The incident comes as Iran has stepped up its persecution of women, particularly by mandating the veil in public, since at least April, according to Amnesty InternationalUnited Nations and other similar organizations.
