Pennsylvania ‘Hamas operative’ vandalized Jewish buildings, donated to ‘Squad’

A self-described “Hamas operative” accused of vandalizing Jewish buildings in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and buying explosives allegedly donated to Democrats on the Israel-criticizing “Team.”

A criminal complaint unsealed in Western District of Pennsylvania charges Mohamad Hamad and Talya Lubit with one count each of defacing and damaging religious real property and one count of conspiracy.

Hamad is a dual citizen of the United States and Lebanon who lives in Coraopolis, Pennsylvania.

Hamad was a member of Pennsylvania Air National Guardassigned to the 171st Maintenance Squadron, stationed in Moon Township, Pa., near Pittsburgh International Airport, until Sept. 13, 2024, “when he was denied access to the facility,” court documents say. He also drove a BMW with Ohio plates.

Lubit is an American citizen living in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh.

On July 29, Chabad of Squirrel Hill, a synagogue and center for Jewish educational programming, reported to the Pittsburgh Police Bureau that the message “Jews 4 Palestine” with an inverted triangle — a pro-Hamas symbol originally used to mark a target Israeli. during the fighting in Gaza – it had been sprayed with red paint on the outside of the building. On the same day, the Jewish Federation, a non-profit organization, also reported to police that an exterior sign at the entrance to its property had been spray-painted red to add the words “Jewish Genocide Works, I Hate Zionists” and a red heart.

A joint FBI investigation and Pittsburgh police discovered that Hamad had bought red paint at Walmart the day before the vandalism was reported at both Jewish buildings. His vehicle was also seen on surveillance video near the crime scene. Lubit is accused of being Hamad’s accomplice in the vandalism.

A recent graduate of Dickinson College in central Pennsylvania, Lubit is a Jewish activist against Israel.

Hamad made a $10 contribution to “Team” member Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., in November 2023, according to the Post. Shortly after October 7, 2023, Omar asked Israel for a cease-fire.

Hamad also donated $5 to the “Squad” member. representative Rashida TlaibD-Mich., in April. This after Congress censured Tlaib for justifying the October 7 attacks as “resistance” against what she called an “apartheid government”.

Court documents list messages sent by Hamad on the encrypted messaging app Signal with Lubit and others.

In one exchange, Hamad shared what is believed to be a photo of himself with his face covered, holding a combination of the United States and Israeli flags, possibly bearing the slogan “We stand with Israel.”

The person believed to be Hamad has his right index finger pointing upwards – a symbol “frequently used to signify Tawhid, a central tenet of Islam that affirms the ‘oneness’ of Allah”, which “was also featured in propaganda adopted by a number of foreign terrorist organizations,” according to court documents.

Investigators note that he appears to be wearing a sweatshirt later lifted from Hamad’s room during the execution of a search warrant. The hoodie had the inverted triangle symbolthe words “RESPECT EXISTENCE OR EXPECT RESISTANCE” and an image of a masked person carrying a firearm on his back.

Hamad also reportedly described himself as a “Hamas agent”.

Later, he and an unnamed associate exchanged messages, making plans to practice igniting “a large casing” on or around July 6, 2024, “as a practice run for a future explosion,” court documents say . The associate later allegedly sent videos of “what appears to be the detonation of an explosive device and a corresponding fireball,” according to investigators, and Hamad responded, writing, “Hell yeah.”

Court documents also detail messages Lubit shared in a group chat that included Hamad.

One message read: “I literally feel myself beginning to see the Jews as my enemies.”
