Heart Walk in Mobile honors lives, raises awareness

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – More than 500 people gathered at the University of South Alabama for the 2024 Mobile Heart Walk for a heartfelt event aimed at raising awareness of heart health and raising critical funds for cardiovascular research.

“We had a natural route, a scenic view for this year’s walk, so pleased,” said Eric Lee, director of development for the American Heart Association of Alabama Gulf Coast.

For Kay Lang and Jontaisha, participating in the Heart Walk is an annual initiative.

“We had a daughter who had a heart transplant about 11 years ago,” Lang said. “So every year, we try to support her and then help her be someone who gives advice and information about heart issues, heart issues and heart health in general.”

Lang says her daughter, C’Ce, was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy as a child. The disease affects the heart muscle, making it harder for the heart to pump blood properly. Despite having surgery, Lang says she died.

“We still represent for her, but we’re just trying to help others not go through what we went through,” Lang adds.

A powerful message as Lang and Jontaisha honor the memory of their loved ones.

“I love it,” Jontaisha said. “I’m very active, so I’m pushing everyone behind him, telling them, you got this, you got this go on.”

Event organizers say the goal is to raise $200,00 and so far they have secured $178,500. To donate, click Here.
