Police: Riverhead man faces felony charges after severely beating another man at West Main Street fishing spot

Riverhead Police are reporting the arrest of a man on charges of assault, weapons possession and criminal mischief last night in connection with an attack at the nearby fishing access at 1129 West Main Street.

Officers responded to a 911 call just after 11 p.m. Thursday night from a 44-year-old man who reported he had been assaulted and needed medical attention, according to a news release from the police.

Police located the man at the DEC State Fishing Access Point and found him to be bleeding from the face and appeared to have multiple injuries to his face and head, the report said.

The man, who police have not identified, told officers he was struck in the face by another man who was armed with a baseball bat and fled the area on foot before police arrived, police said.

According to the report, a Riverhead Police K9 unit helped officers locate the suspect in a nearby wooded area. The K9 unit also found evidence believed to have been used in the crime, police said. The suspect also caused extensive damage to the victim’s vehicle, a 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander, during the attack, police said.

The Lower Peconic River fishing access is in a wilderness area located off a narrow, unlit lane on the south side of West Main Street, almost across from Snowflake Ice Cream. The trail crosses the Peconic River and leads to a LIPA substation in the Peconic Bog County Park.

According to the report, Shurvelle Rush, 47, of Riverhead, was arrested and transported to Riverhead Police Department headquarters where he was charged with:

One (1) count of first degree assault, PL section 120.10.01, a class B felony;

One (1) count of criminal possession of a weapon in the 3rd degree, PL section 265.02.01, a class D misdemeanor; and

One (1) count of Criminal Mischief degree 3, PL section 145.05.02, a class E felony.

He was held for arraignment in Riverhead Town Court.

The victim was treated at the scene by Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps personnel and transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead, police said. He was later transferred to Long Island Jewish Medical Center in Queens because of the severity of his injuries, police said.

The investigation is ongoing at this time and anyone with information is asked to contact Riverhead Police at 631-727-4500.
