Vice-President Kamala Harris has a narrow lead over the former president Donald Trump in the final Des Moines Register poll of Iowa, a shocking result showing her with an advantage in a state that is expected to be firmly in Trump’s corner.

the survey, sponsored by the Des Moines Register and chaired by J. Ann Selzer, made the final results of the Iowa presidential race in both 2016 and 2020. While Iowa is no longer considered a swing state and rewards only six electoral votes, the Register poll remains close watched as an indicator of how white voters in the Midwest might vote.

The poll found Harris winning 47 percent of the vote to Trump’s 44 percent.

“It’s hard for anyone to say they saw this coming,” Selzer told the paper. “She has clearly jumped into a leadership position.”

Selzer and the Register surveyed 808 likely voters in Iowa between Oct. 28 and Oct. 31. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.4 percentage points.
