Weather permitting: Fayetteville weekend forecast

For the Cape Fear region, rainfall has been a feast or famine situation this year.

After one of the wettest Septembers on record (thanks to two tropical systems), Fayetteville quietly slipped into one of the driest Octobers on record. The airport received 0.01 inches of rain. It’s about mosquito spit, and it’s certainly not enough to settle the dust.

Still, according to the US Drought Monitor, the Cape Fear region isn’t even abnormally dry—at least not yet. And there is actually a slight chance of light rain for the region.

Here is the setup

A dry front pushed through the region, bringing slightly cooler temperatures and strong winds — but again, no rain. As the front moves through, the Cape Fear region will see dry conditions persist, with temperatures sliding into the mid to upper 40s Friday morning.

Friday afternoon will be a bit cooler, say mid 70s for Fayetteville, with the first clouds we’ve seen in a while. However, don’t look for rain just yet. Friday’s football weather will be pleasant, with kickoff temperatures around 68 degrees.

Weekend

Temperatures will warm on Saturday and southwesterly winds will pick up ahead of an advancing front. We will see some clouds and highs will likely drop back to the low 80s. Some spots may see 85 degrees.

As the front moves through Saturday evening, scattered showers should move across the region. Don’t look for any heavy accumulation, maybe a tenth of an inch at best.

What you will notice is much cooler air arriving on Sunday. Temperatures in the region will be in the mid-60s with a strong northeasterly flow. Lows will drop back into the mid to low 40s.

On the way

The next work week will start off cold for Fayetteville with highs in the upper 60s. As the high pressure moves offshore, things will warm up again. Tuesday should be back in the mid 70s, Wednesday and Thursday back to 80 degrees under partly sunny skies.

Halloween perspective

Remember when I said the patterns point to a chilly Halloween? Forget it. The cooler air originally predicted will stay well to our west.

Instead, Halloween temperatures will climb to near 80 during the day and still be in the 60s by sunset. The rest of the week looks warm and.

Have a wonderful weekend!
