The Utah Tech shooting suspect was caught on camera fleeing the scene after police arrived

Utah Tech police have arrested a sexual assault suspect who was caught on camera fleeing the scene.

Police confirmed that the victims of Friday morning’s attacks were young female students living in campus housing.

Following a Halloween event on campus, a former student allegedly gained unauthorized entry into dorm rooms, raising serious concerns for student safety.

KUTV spoke with Police Chief Wes LiCalzi about the ongoing investigation and the university’s response to support students and increase campus safety.

According to police, the suspect — 22-year-old Alex Barajas — gained key card access to a campus building and entered three separate bedrooms in Campus View Suites I.

Utah Tech students Noah and Hunter expressed their shock at the incidents.

“It’s just awful,” Noah said.

“It’s something that should definitely never happen,” Hunter said. “It’s disappointing to hear, obviously. It’s something that needs to be fixed.”

Police reports indicated that around 3 a.m., following a Halloween dance, Barajas allegedly targeted three female students.

LiCalzi explained that the first call came from one of the victims, and when the police arrived, two more victims came forward.

“The other two had already happened. And when the officer arrived, who was very quick, the suspect. . . he ran from another exit,” Licalzi said.

Although the building requires key card access, LiCalzi noted that individual dorm rooms were likely left unlocked, allowing the suspect to enter. The victims lived on the same dorm floor, although it is unclear if they knew each other personally.

“Obviously, what they need now is support,” LiCalzi said. “I spent time talking to parents and the different resources they have, doing trauma-based interviews.”

The police chief also emphasized the importance of campus safety and urged students to remain vigilant.

“We’ve tried to make it as easy as possible for you to call us. We just need that call to help,” he said. “Situational awareness is key; being aware of the environment can make a big difference.”

Anyone with additional information about this incident is encouraged to contact the Utah Tech Police Department at 435-627-4300.

Students affected by the events or seeking support can access counseling and resources at Utah Tech’s Wellness Center by walking in or calling 435-652-7755.

The suspect has a criminal record, although not at the university. He faces three counts of rape, three counts of burglary, two counts of lewdness and one count of criminal trespass to a dwelling.

Utah Tech Police are continuing to investigate and additional updates will be provided as they become available.
