Former North Country man promoted to deputy police chief in North Carolina

A native of Russell and a graduate of Edwards-Knox Central School and SUNY Canton, he was recently promoted to Deputy Chief of Police in the Kannapolis, NC Police Department.

Chris Hill, son of Roger and Deborah Hill of Richfield, NC followed in his father’s footsteps in law enforcement. Roger was a longtime officer and detective sergeant with the Canton Police Department.

Hill graduated from SUNY Canton in 2008 with a bachelor’s degree in criminal investigation. He looked back fondly on his education in the North Country.

“I am grateful for my education at SUNY Canton. The practical courses have served me well throughout my career. I think they gave me a step forward in that I came out of college with some of the skills and knowledge to be successful in law enforcement,” Hill said.

He moved to North Carolina after graduating college and began working for the Kannapolis PD in February 2009. Kannapolis is a city of approximately 60,000 people located approximately 20 miles north of Charlotte.

“I have been fortunate enough to serve in many different capacities including patrol, investigations and vice/narcotics. Our agency has 96 officers and 29 civilian personnel. I am proud to continue the police family tradition as my father is a retired Detective Sergeant after serving 28 years with the Canton Police Department,” continued Hill.

He was promoted to sergeant in 2014, lieutenant in 2020 and captain in 2021.

As Deputy Chief of Police, he will oversee the efficient operation of the police department’s three offices and assist in the implementation of the department’s policies, plans and strategies.

He received his Advanced Law Enforcement Certification from the North Carolina Commission on Criminal Justice Training and Standards. He also graduated from the FBI’s Law Enforcement Executive Development Association training program. He completed the Cabarrus Chamber Leadership program and has been involved in various community organizations.

In 2014 he received the Roger Dale Carter Memorial Service Award, the highest honor given by the Kannapolis Police Department. He also received two unit commendations and a safe driving award. He is an active member of Coddle Creek ARP Church. He and his wife, Claire, have three children.
