The secret British workshop that transforms classic Porsche 911s for the super rich

Hawley speaks enthusiastically about Porsches, his admiration for them eclipsed only by his passion for improving the originals, picking up where the German firm left off. The 911 has always been an expensive, enthusiast-oriented car, but it has always been a type-approved production car with all the restrictions that come with that. Hawley has no such qualms though, and the huge budgets he’s working with mean he can help the 964 reach its potential without having to realize it.

“We’re basically making concept cars for the road,” he says. “It’s extremely liberating.” Obviously, replacing the steel frame with carbon fiber – something Theon can do – will change the feel of the car, but the renowned mechanics in Hawley’s barn can install and tune an engine and gearbox of the customer’s choice. All the variables that determine a car’s behavior and performance are within Hawley’s grasp; sliding into the driver’s seat is an insight into the private creative process he shares with the client.

Thanks to said client, I was offered a private screening. Unlike a stock car, which is designed to comply with regulations and make a profit, Theon’s creations reflect an individual’s private dreams. Theon brings the cars into the 21st century, adding features like reversing cameras and advanced brake lights as per customer requirements, but the turn of the key unlocks the secret conversations Hawley had with his customers.
