The chances for tropical development in the Caribbean and Atlantic are increasing, with possible impacts on the Gulf Coast

Chances for tropical development in the southern Caribbean are increasing, with forecasters expecting a depression to form over the weekend as two areas of low pressure feed in with warm waters and minimal wind shear.

While computer models have yet to provide detailed projections, forecasters predict the developing system could move into the Gulf of Mexico, guided by a high pressure system to the northeast and a sinking jet stream over the center US. If named, the storm would be named “Patty.”

Although the exact location of the Gulf Coast remains uncertain, cooler waters and increased wind shear in the Gulf are expected to weaken the system as it approaches. Early forecasts suggest the system could bring a higher chance of rain to parts of the Gulf Coast next week as it breaks up.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, 2024.
