Man accused in fatal shooting in Portland denied bail

A judge has denied bail for the man accused of murder in a shooting since the end of July in Morrill’s Corner that left a woman dead and may have been linked to rival motorcycle clubs.

Aaron Karp, 47, made his first appearance in Cumberland County Superior Court in August and had a bail hearing in September. At that hearing, friends and family members described Karp as a loving son and provider and pleaded for him to be released on bail.

But Karp was denied bail by a Superior Court judge, according to Harnish’s Oct. 21 order.

to Karp’s initial hearing, Prosecutors said Karp shot Susan McHugh, 54, who later died of her injuries, during a confrontation between a pair of rival biker gangs.

“This court concludes that there is sufficient circumstantial evidence to establish probable cause that Mr. Karp willfully and knowingly caused the death of Susan McHugh by pointing a gun at her and firing multiple shots,” the judge said in the order. “The court cannot conclude that there is no risk to the public or others if Mr. Karp were to be released on bail.”
