Day of the Dead celebrated in the state of Kansas

TOPEKA (KSNT) – People in the state of Kansas celebrated Dias De Los Muertos, also known as the Day of the Dead, on Friday.

It is a celebration of remembrance. Students and families from Wichita, Dodge City and Topeka all gathered at the Kansas State Capitol to honor and educate others about this holiday.

The celebration began with Dodge City students telling everyone about the holiday in English and Spanish. Wichita Latin Dancers followed the presentation with two performances featuring dancers as young as four years old.

A special dessert ended the capitol feast, Bread of the Dead.

“So it’s a very special bread,” said Ernesto De La Rosa, president of the Kansas Hispanic Affairs Commission. “Today was produced by one of our local Latinos here in Topeka. Wonderful bread. So it’s meaningful again to our loved ones and it’s a way to show our appreciation and remember them.”

The holiday continues its celebration today, celebrating the spirits of children who have passed on. And then, starting at midnight, the focus shifts to all the adults.
