Law enforcement agencies throughout the county are working to ensure election day safety

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — With Election Day just days away, as more vote centers open this weekend, law enforcement agencies across the county are working to make sure everyone is safe.

“It doesn’t matter what side of the political spectrum you are on. We all have a responsibility to vote safely and vote civilly,” says People’s Bar Association President Shane Harris.

That’s the message law enforcement wants to convey to voters this election season when they gathered Friday for a press conference organized by the Popular Association of Attorneys at Law.

Law enforcement agencies worked within their departments, making sure they could respond to calls when needed. But you won’t see them at the Voting Centers.

“You’re not going to see officers posted at polling places on purpose,” said Lt. Daniel Meyer of the San Diego Police Department. “However, we are ready and able to respond quickly to threats or hazards in any of those locations when we receive a call for service.”

Law enforcement agencies from local to state and federal have been working closely with the Register of Voters when it comes to reports of any potential problems as more than 200 additional vote centers open this Saturday across the county.

“We are also scheduling meetings with law enforcement to see if there is any credible information that we should be aware of and act on,” said Cynthia Paes, the county clerk of voters. “All poll workers know if they feel threatened to call 911.”

The Registrar of Voters will also be keeping an eye on the observers. Under California Election Law, the public has a right to observe various election-related activities. What they cannot do is prevent, interfere with, interrupt or attempt to assist in electoral operations.
