Bay Area beaches begin to reopen after Hurricane Milton

Recovery efforts continue in the Bay Area afterward Hurricane Helene and Miltonbut several beaches in the area are starting to reopen.

Manatee County Public Beach reopened earlier this week.

Officials say parking may be limited, however, as they are still cleaning up sand and debris. Several businesses, including the Anna Maria Island Beach Café, are also open.

County officials say they hope to reopen Coquina Beach by this weekend.

Crews continue to rake the sand there to prepare it for visitors. Nearby parking areas are used for sand sifting operations to return clean sand directly to the beaches from where it was washed. Officials say this on-site process is designed to save money, time and effort.

Cortez Beach had more damage and will take longer to reopen.

Access points to the beach are closed and there is still debris on the sand. Crews must remove tons of sand and debris and rebuild and repair infrastructure.

County officials, including District Three Commissioner Kevin Van Ostenbridge, Manatee County Natural Resources Director Charlie Hunsicker and Manatee County Parks and Lands Deputy Director Carmine DeMilio will discuss the “fast timeline” for reopening the beaches at a press conference at 10:30 Friday morning.

Several beaches in the Sarasota area will reopen Saturday, with the exception of Lido Beach.

It has been closed since September 25. Crews removed mountains of sand up to four feet high just to get to the damaged pavilion and sidewalks, then had to make repairs.

Hurricane Helene damaged the concession area and public access points there, including warped sidewalks and sidewalks. Hurricane Milton damaged it even more. Officials say they anticipate Lido Beach reopening soon.
