Police investigating the crash of a small aircraft near Räyskälä airfield in Loppi, southern Finland, last week, said there was no reason to believe that any crime had been committed in connection with the incident.

Two German citizens died when the two-seater plane crashed shortly after takeoff on October 16.

While no foul play is suspected, police said an investigation into the cause of the crash will continue.

“Several people involved in this matter have yet to be interviewed,” Detective Chief Insp Marko Mäkinen from the Häme Police Department told Yle.

The Safety Investigation Authority of Finland (Otkes) has launched its own investigation into the incident, and the investigation is likely to last several weeks.

The early stages of the investigation uncovered evidence that the aircraft’s engine had shut down mid-flight.

“The propeller marks indicate that it was not rotating when it hit the ground,” investigator Otkes Janne Kotiranta said last week, adding that the aircraft did not have a black box, often used in accident investigations to determine the events leading up to a crash.
