RAPID CITY, SD (KOTA) – Tucked across the street from The Lodge at Deadwood is a building currently under construction. However, this building is not for gaming, it is there to protect and serve the people of Lawrence County.

The county will soon be getting a new public safety building as construction has been underway since September 2022.

Lawrence County Sheriff Brian Dean says he has advised the County Board of Commissioners to conduct a study to see how big a public safety building it needs.

Dean wants to make sure the new building is sized appropriately for the number of people it will house.

He adds that the new facility is designed around the county’s unique workflow.

“This will allow us to operate safely with a minimum staff appropriate for a county of our size,” Dean said.

He added that construction is scheduled to be completed by Nov. 18, but he doesn’t think it will be finished on time.

Dean hopes he and his staff will be operating in the new building by the end of the year.
