Bronx newborn death: 14-year-old mother allegedly threw child out window of Soundview building, police say

SOUNDVIEW, Bronx (WABC) — The 14-year-old mother of the newborn found Wednesday in the Bronx has been found, police said.

Police said the teenager threw the child out the window of a building on St. Lawrence Ave.

The mother is being interviewed by detectives.

An autopsy by the medical examiner will determine whether the baby was born alive, according to police.

Police said a newborn girl was found in the yard of a apartment building around 11:15 a.m. Wednesday.

The child was discovered by a construction worker. She was unconscious and unresponsive with the umbilical cord still attached.

The contractor then notified the building manager, who told Eyewitness News he wished he had known sooner.

“I was like crazy because they say the baby was there for almost three or four days and the baby was next to my living room,” said the building manager named Carlos. “I could have looked out the window and seen the baby.”

EMS pronounced her dead at the scene and the medical examiner will determine her cause of death.

Residents said they were in shock.

“Why don’t you take the baby to church, you don’t want the baby, take it to church or have someone come and take care of the baby,” said one resident.

The law allows a parent to drop off a child at a hospital or police or fire station without having to give a name.

According to police sources, the police believe that the teenager was hiding the fact that she was pregnant. They also said that the area where the child was found is apparently difficult to reach.

No arrests have been made so far.
