Montreal police arrested two protesters at Concordia University on Thursday afternoon for allegedly assaulting a campus security officer at an anti-cop protest.

A 21-year-old woman and a 24-year-old man were detained after a security guard sustained minor injuries during the incident, police spokesperson Caroline Chèvrefils said in a statement to The Gazette.

The arrests were made after the protest reportedly escalated inside the Guy-Concordia metro station, where some demonstrators attempted to access tunnels connecting to the university’s de Maisonneuve Blvd. entrance, prompting security officers to intervene. Police stepped in to assist following reports that a guard had been assaulted.

The protest comes after a statement from the Concordia Student Union, which accused the university of enabling police brutality during a protest in late September and called for a ban on police presence on campus. The statement added that “autonomous students” were organizing a protest on Thursday in response.

According to Chèvrefils, the protest began around 1:45 pm near Ste-Catherine and St-Denis streets before moving towards Concordia’s Webster Library, where demonstrators gathered to call for a police-free campus. At approximately 2:30 pm, the crowd marched along de Maisonneuve Blvd., entering the métro station around 3 pm

The two arrested were released on condition that they appear before a judge.
