Driver Pulled From KC Creek After Cars Seaplane On I-35 During Evening Thunderstorm

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (KCTV) – A driver was pulled from a creek in Kansas City and taken to a nearby hospital after her car hydroplaned off I-35 during an evening thunderstorm.

The Kansas Highway Patrol indicates that around 8:45 PM on Wednesday, October 30, emergency crews were called to the area of I-35 and Lamar Ave. with reports that a car crashed into Turkey Creek.

When first responders arrived, they said they found Mariann J. Castillo, 21, of Roeland Park, had been northbound on the highway in her 2007 Honda Accord. However, Castillo walked by seaplane as a storm moved through the area, causing the car to veer off the roadway to the right.

State troopers noted that the Honda drove off an embankment and into the creek, where it landed on its left side.

Emergency crews said Castillo was taken to University of Kansas Medical Center with suspected minor injuries. She was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident. No other information has been released.
