ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi on Thursday assured Chinese Ambassador Jiang Zaidong of additional security measures for the safety of Chinese nationals in Pakistan.

The minister, during a meeting at the Chinese embassy in Islamabad, expressed solidarity with Ambassador Zaidong over an incident in which two Chinese nationals were injured after being shot by a security guard in Karachi.

The foreign nationals were injured after firing on a textile factory in the Sindh Industrial Trading Estate (Site) area of Karachi.

Going further, the security czar stressed that Pakistan prioritizes the welfare and security of Chinese nationals, especially those working on projects under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

The minister also briefed the ambassador on the details of the incident, assured him of a speedy and transparent investigation and reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to ensure justice.

Addressing the security concerns of CPEC projects, Naqvi asserted that Pakistan is taking “all possible measures” to protect Chinese citizens and assets related to CPEC.

Stressing security protocols for creating a safe and stable environment, especially in regions where Chinese citizens live or work, he said: “We fully agree with the Chinese approach of combining development with security, and will ensure the safety of Chinese citizens and of projects as a top priority”.

Security forces have been actively working to strengthen security measures, especially in Karachi, to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future, Naqvi noted.

The minister’s meeting with the Chinese envoy comes a day after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif strongly condemned the carriage incident on Chinese nationals during his visit to the Beijing embassy.

The Prime Minister said that instructions have already been issued to provide the best medical facilities to the injured and that he is personally monitoring the investigation process to ensure that those responsible for the attack are brought to justice.
