Man attacked with hammer during burglary

A man has been taken to hospital after being attacked with a hammer at his own home in Newry, police said.

It happened in the Violet Hill Avenue area of ​​the city at around 8pm BST on Wednesday when he was disturbed by a burglary.

He said he was assaulted by two men wielding a hammer, while one of the men also had a machete-style knife.

The victim’s injuries are not believed to be life-threatening and a 40-year-old man has been arrested.

The man was arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary, assault occasioning actual bodily harm (ABH) and possession of an offensive weapon with intent to commit an indictable offence.

He remains in police custody at this time.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) is continuing its inquiries and has appealed for anyone with information to come forward.
