Mother of 16-year-old Kennedy Heights shooting victim speaks out

CINCINNATI — Two teenagers are still in the hospital after a Tuesday’s drive-by shooting in Kennedy Heights.

Police initially reported that a 17-year-old and a 16-year-old were injured in the shooting. The mother of one of the teenagers shot told WCPO 9 it was actually her 16-year-old son and his 15-year-old friend.

That mother said her son is now out of the intensive care unit, but his 15-year-old friend is still in intensive care after being shot in the head. She said her son is awake and talking but has a broken rib.

The 16-year-old’s mother asked us to withhold her identity because she was concerned for her and her son’s safety.

“He and a group of kids were coming home from school, they were walking down the street right down from our house, and the guys drove by and started shooting,” she said.

His mother told us her son tried to run, was shot twice, including in the chest, and ended up on another street where first responders found him.

“They literally chased him down and shot him,” she said.

Raeshawn Gipson is fixing up his niece’s house in the area and showed us the window that was hit by a bullet during Tuesday’s shooting.

“The police went in, they didn’t find the bullet, they’re looking for it, but they don’t see it,” Gipson said.

He was relieved that no one in his family was hurt.

The 16-year-old’s mother said the White Chevy Spark, which is believed to be connected to the shooting, has been on the block several times in the past year. She said she contacted Cincinnati Police District 2 headquarters several times.

“Terrorizing these kids in this neighborhood with guns running, pulling them into cars, chasing them, scaring them with guns harassing them,” she said. “We thought we were doing the best we could by reporting the police to the authorities.”

I asked her if she thought there needed to be more police patrolling her neighborhood.

“Yes, yes,” she said. “I asked for it. I was told there would be more patrols around, it hasn’t happened yet.”
