Man airlifted to hospital after accident, running from law enforcement

CALHOUN COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) – A man is seriously injured after he crashed his vehicle while fleeing law enforcement on Oct. 27, leaving him hospitalized.

According to the Georgia State Patrol (GSP), a trooper was on GA 216 north of Arlington, Calhoun County near Turman Road and observed a 2016 Nissan Maxima traveling south at a high rate of speed. The driver was going 79 mph in a 55 mph zone.

When the trooper attempted a traffic stop, the driver of the vehicle increased his speed further as he entered the city of Arlington. The officer then advised that he was in a pursuit.

GSP says the driver of the vehicle failed to negotiate a curve and lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle left the roadway striking two utility poles, several mailboxes, driveway markers, a fire hydrant and downed power lines at a residence.

The officer rendered aid to the driver and called EMS. The driver was airlifted to Tallahassee with serious injuries.

The driver was later identified as Jamaal Wesley.

The specialist collision reconstruction team SCRT G Troop has been called in to assist with the ongoing investigation.

We will provide more information when we hear from officials.
