Adele says ‘rare’ infection was ‘most painful thing’

  • Adele told members of her Las Vegas residency audience about her recent experience with a “painful” infection.
  • “It was worse than giving birth,” she said.
  • But she pulled through, thanks to treatment, insisting she won’t miss any of her final shows for “a very long time,” she recently announced.

Even when Adele is sick, the show must go on. This is especially the case now because she is getting closer “very long” performance hiatus after her ongoing Las Vegas residency ends, she announced in August. And on a recent show, she admitted to fans that she was suffering from an infection with symptoms “worse than childbirth”.

In a granular audience filmed by members moment posted on X, Adele sat down on her piano bench to get real with her crowd between songs. “Actually, I have an ear infection, which is pretty grim. I’ve never had an ear infection before,” she said. “It’s the most painful thing that’s ever happened to me in my life – it was worse than giving birth.”

The singer went on to explain that the infection was caused by a “rare water bacterium,” which made it difficult to treat. As a result, she was given the wrong antibiotics “for a few days,” she explained, and was eventually prescribed a drug that “started to work.”

Fortunately, she is “no longer in pain, which is great,” she said, but she remains “a little bit deaf” in one ear. Even so, “There was no way I was going to miss the damn show,” she exclaimed to a roaring crowd.

There are different types of ear infections – the most common being a middle ear infectionor otitis media, and swimmer’s earor otitis externa, which affects the canal between the external and middle ear. Middle ear infections are usually caused by existing illnesses, such as a cold, flu, or allergy, that lead to congestion and fluid buildup. Swimmer’s ear, on the other hand, is named after the most common culprit, infected water.

Essentially, when water gets trapped in the ear, usually after swimming, bacteria that thrive in warm, moist environments multiply and cause infections. Symptoms of swimmer’s ear are ear pain, muffled hearing, hearing loss, full ears, fever, fluid drainage, redness, swelling and swollen lymph nodes, according to the Cleveland Clinic. Symptoms of a middle ear infection include ear pain, drainage, and hearing problems, the Mayo Clinic states.

Whatever type of infection Adele had, we’re glad to see her mostly recovered and back on stage. The show marks one of 10 final shows the 36-year-old plans to host before going on hiatus, she announced at an August concert in Munich, per People. “I have 10 shows to do, but after that, I won’t be seeing you for an incredibly long time,” she said. “And I will hold you dear to my heart.”
