Hearing from locals about the issues that affect them, one problem stands out

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — Spending the day at our Channel 13 Fighting Together local advocacy fair gave me a chance to connect directly with many local people and also connect them with community organizations that are there to help.

From the Attorney General’s office to the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada, the Metro Citizen Review Board, you name it – we’ve had quite a few organizations to provide help and advice to our local community.

We’ve heard a lot about your issues—from HOA situations to Formula 1 affecting your local businesses. But there was one topic that many people brought up that we didn’t have a stand for – yet it’s still on the minds of many.

A woman named Sandy said she has lived in Las Vegas for 18 years. After hearing about our fair, Sandy said she wanted to talk about the issue on her mind.

“My only issue is the medical care that I would like to see improved here,” Sandy said.

In one of my recent ones “Darcy, what’s the matter?” segments, we reported on local residents’ concerns about long waits to see doctors and the need to train and retain more medical professionals in Nevada.

At the fair, we had representation from the healthcare industry: Solutions for Change, which provides low-cost and in some cases no-cost counseling and therapy services to the uninsured and underinsured. But the help they provide extends far beyond that.

“Maybe you’re food insecure. Maybe you need legal help, medical help or how to find healthcare. We don’t just offer therapy, we offer full services that help people,” said Nick Matthews with Solutions for Change.

Sandy said that while there was no quick fix to her problem of waiting months to see a medical specialist, she was grateful for the opportunity to learn what immediate help Las Vegas had to offer.

“Everyone has been so warm and welcoming and kind, and I’ve had fun just getting to know people from our community, so it’s been very rewarding,” Sandy said.

As we continue our mission to fight for what’s right for local people, we know that what happened at our Local Advocacy Fair is just the beginning. There is still much to do and we are in this together.
